Music Theory

Genral

Intertextuality: - 'The relationships between texts'. This is where someone uses, or somewhat refers back to, something thats already been done. For example, 'Robbie Williams' refers to the band 'KISS' and 'Ozzy Osbourne' in the video 'Let Me Entertain You'. This is only one of many examples. Intertextuality is a effective way of engaging and making the audience relate to the video.

Exhibitionism - 'A tendency to display in such ways to attract attention'. This focus'; on ways artists are potrayed and act in there videos to draw people in.

Andrew Goodwin Theory
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
Close ups of artists and motifs (a visual style) are created due to the label wanting there artist to be shown.
There is often a intertextual referance to a movies, tv programs, music videos etc.

Steve Archers Theory
There no need for a strong relationship between the the narrtive and proformance.
There will be cuts through out the video between the narrative and proformance.
Choregraphed dance might be added for an extra aspect for the video, purely for visualisation.

Architects - Always - The performance and narrative have no connection

John Stewart's Theory
Astehtics of TV commercials, with lots of lighting and closes ups on the stars face.
Visual referances are used, mainly from fashion, art and cinema.
'Incorporating, raiding and reconstructing' is intertextuality. Yet people may see this as 'Kicking Ideas', this is not if the idea is down in the same way.
Video allows the artist to access the performer than just a stage show.
Mis-en-scene can hint towarsds the mood of the songs, the artists lifestyles etc ...

Sigmund Freud's Theory
Voyeurism: - 'The practise of obtaining sexual gratification by looking at sexual objects or acts, esepically secretivley'.

Laura Mulvey's Theory
Becuase film makers are usually male, the vision of women is purley for display. This is to facilitate a voyeurisitic responce from vewiers. This intregs males into a 'Male Gaze' at the female.

Rhianna - Had a banned video in 2011 for to much explisit material
